Welcome

HENRY RICHARD AND MYRTLE MCFADYEN FAMILY TREE

This is a family tree wiki for the descendants of H.R. and Myrtle McFadyen. In addition to the descendants, this family tree will, of course, list their spouses, stepchildren, and adopted children who are not related by blood to H.R. and Myrtle.

All family members will have the password. With the password, they gain access to the Family Tree itself. Just enter the password in the box below and press "Enter" or click on "OK." Then you will see a "Family Tree" link where the box was. Click on the Family Tree link, and you will be there!

When you get to the Family Tree, you will see information in a form similar to what was originally used by Henry C. McFadyen, Jr. in printed family tree documents he once circulated thru snail-mail. Anybody who reads the Family Tree can change anything he or she wants! Try it! You can't hurt anything. This way we can keep the Family Tree document accurate and up-to-date.

To make a change yourself, just click on the "Edit" tab at the top of the page. You will see a big box where you can edit the text or add new text. Tip: You will likely see a big red message at the top: "An author name is required." Look under the big text box and you will see a little box waiting for the your name next to the word "Author." Put your first name in the author box. Then your are good to go! (The purpose of this is to allow me to see who made recent changes.)

Making changes to the text is pretty easy. Just type in the big box to make a sentence. Hit Enter to make a new paragraph. There are tips for more sophisticated formats below the big text box, but we are going to avoid fancy stuff and keep this wiki simple.

When you get to the Family Tree, you will also see a "Logout" link appear in the side bar on the left. When you leave the Family Tree, please click on Logout. This helps the fine folks who make this service available to us.

A few words about security: We have a password to protect our information from others. The risk of intrusion and abuse probably is small. But it's only sensible to block access. Otherwise, the Family Tree could be read by anybody in the world. In addition to using a password, we should be careful about what information we put on the wiki. Names, post office mailing addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses may be the only information that all family members will contribute.

It goes without saying that any family member can remove information, and we will not publish anything about you that you don't want on the Internet. Any member could also make a short report of what he or she is up to at the moment. But we should not put up information that could be used by any "cracker" to probe further about the activities of a family member. At this time, there is no way to put pictures on our wiki. For now anyway, this wiki is limited to text.

To the left of this Welcome is a side-bar with links. Links you always see are: Welcome, FAQ, and AllRecentChanges. The purpose of Welcome (this page) is to present a firewall to all who don't know the password. The FAQ will give you more information about this wiki. The AllRecentChanges page lets the wikiwizard see what changes have been made so he or she can check to see if all is well. (That's why you can't hurt anything.) The Logout link was already explained.

The only page where you should make a change is the Family Tree that you get with the password. Only the wikiwizard should change the Welcome, FAQ, and AllRecentChanges pages. The wikiwizard right now is Henry C. McFadyen, Jr. However, anybody can become the wizard by merely asking for the job.

If you are not ready to be wikiwizard, maybe you can be a wikignome. A wikignome is a somewhat neurotic soul who can't stand to see anything wrong and has spare time to do something about it. He or she will go over all the text on the wiki to be sure that everthing is perfect...that all the telephone numbers are written exactly the same way, etc.

Cuz Henry, Jr.
