Big Turtle Native American Reproduction Artifacts
These exquisitely handcrafted Native American War shirts are hand made by
Kecketwawezewin Ahuung (keh-cheh-twah-weh-zah-win Ah-nung) meaning “Glory Star”.
This name was given to her by Chief Charley Dawes of the Ottawa Tribe.
These authentic Native American war shirts/scalp shirts are made using either tanned elk
or deer hide. They are each different being adorned with ornamental bead work, trade beads,
numerous hair scalp-lock drops, hand painted feathers, rosettes, ermine tails, shells and/or
other decorations. War shirts are appreciated for their intense beauty and proud display of
Tribal Honor. The painted designs tell the story of the warriors’ experiences and gives the
shirt an added sense of historical presence and power.
The war shirt/scalp shirt had to be earned by acts of great sacrifice and bravery. They are
symbols of status, honor, and tradition for the Native American culture.
There is great symbolism with the hair scalp-lock attached to the shirt. If a warrior
acquired hair from his family or it was taken in battle it was considered an extension of
the persons soul and was added to his power and strength.
One of the beliefs is that animals possess special powers that can give the wears insight,
strength, and talents.
